The History of Skincare in the Eastern World

Skincare is one of the biggest concerns for women nowadays. In fact, it is also a big concern for women in the past. Whitening is always the number one concern of eastern women because they tend to have yellowish skin. Therefore, whitening products are of the highest sales number in the eastern world including China and Japan.

Light complexion was considered as a sign for elegant and educated nobles and higher social classes in the ancient China. Therefore, women in ancient China put a lot of effort to maintain light complexion. There was an oracle word meaning facial cleansing in the ancient Zhou Dynasty.

The history of Chinese Medical Science can be traced back to the ancient China. The skincare functions of many medicines were recorded in the ancient books. For example, Angelica Dahurica (Bai Zhi) was recorded as an ingredient for facial cream.

Skincare became more popular in the later Tang Dynasty. Every woman at that time had their own facial and hand cream, especially for noble and people in high social classes.

Not only women in ancient China, women in ancient Japan also concerned about their skin. At the time of ancient Japan, only dim light was available at night. Therefore, it was difficult to notice a person especially when his or her skin is dark. Since then, light complexion has become a sign of noble and wealthy women. That is also a main reason that the face of Japanese women are in white in Japanese paintings.
