Dolce and Gabbana - The Perfume Story
Domenico Dolce was born into the fashion business, in a manner of speaking. Born in 1958, his father was a tailor and the family business was a small clothing factory, where he worked while studying fashion. Dolce later moved to the fashion hub of Milan, where he found work in a design studio and furthered his skills and fuelled his passion to create award winning clothing designs.
Stefano Gabbana wasn't born into the trade, but cut his teeth as a graphic designer and went on to the field of advertising. However, he became intrigued with the world of fashion and in 1980, he began working with Domenico Dolce at a design studio where he rapidly got up to speed on fashion design.
By the time 1982 rolled around, Dolce & Gabbana had begun producing designs for other manufacturers on a freelance basis, leading to the 1985 launch of their women's line. Their designs were quickly adopted by the rich and famous, being worn by celebrities including Nicole Kidman, Madonna and Demi Moore, among others. Their clothing was distinctive for its bold, bright colors, use of animal prints, stripes and other eye-catching elements. Stylish, yet casual, Dolce & Gabbana had firmly established itself as a big name in the industry, winning the Woolmark Award in 1990.
The costumes for Madonna's Girlie Show were created by Dolce & Gabbana. Shops have been opened around the world, in addition to creating lines of menswear and fragrances.
In 1996, a techno beat single was recorded by the partners, who said "D&G is love" along with the music. An original statement that they would retire at age forty has not been made fact, as yet, a lucky break for the fashion world that has embraced the talent and style of Dolce & Gabbana.
Women's fragrances include Dolce & Gabbana Pour Femme, which won International Perfume Academy's award for Best Women's Fragrance in 1993. It has a sharp, but sweet, fragrance, and is gently feminine, but determined. Like many of their perfumes, it lets each woman make her own scent statement.
D&G's Light Blue for Women is another hit. This is an eau de toilette with fruity and floral notes, along with a sexy undercurrent of musk and a hint of Sicilian citron, a scent surely familiar to Domenico Dolce from his boyhood in Sicily. Chic and feminine, this is a scent which many women count as their favorite.
